Accelerating Deployment with Modular Design for a Colocation Data Center

Case Overview

Industry: Colocation & Edge Data Centers

Company Size: 100,000 sq. ft. facility

Location: Atlanta, Georgia

Service Provided: Modular Data Center Design & Sustainability Strategy

Challenge: Need for rapid deployment, scalability, and energy-efficient design

The Challenge

A colocation provider in Atlanta needed to build a new edge data center to support the growing demand for low-latency cloud services and AI workloads. However, traditional data center construction timelines of 18 to 24 months were too slow to meet market needs. Additionally, the client wanted a sustainable, scalable design that could accommodate future expansion while ensuring power efficiency and regulatory compliance. With pressure to go live within 9 months, the client sought an innovative approach to reduce construction time without compromising reliability.

Our Approach

We implemented a modular data center design strategy that reduced deployment time by 40% and optimized energy efficiency. The plan consisted of three key phases:

1. Pre-Fabricated Modular Units for Rapid Deployment

  • Designed pre-fabricated server halls, cooling modules, and power units in an offsite factory.

  • Allowed simultaneous manufacturing and site preparation, reducing on-site labor needs.

  • Used a containerized approach to enable future expansion with minimal disruption.

2. Sustainable & Energy-Efficient Infrastructure

  • Integrated liquid cooling and advanced airflow management to reduce power consumption.

  • Designed for a PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) of 1.2, significantly lower than the industry average (1.5–1.7).

  • Included solar-ready roofing and battery storage to improve energy resilience.

3. Smart Automation & Remote Monitoring

  • Implemented AI-driven cooling optimization to adapt energy use based on real-time demand.

  • Deployed automated ESG reporting tools for compliance with GRI and CSRD standards.

  • Integrated remote monitoring & predictive maintenance, reducing the need for on-site technicians.

“The modular approach transformed our data center construction timeline. We went live in record time, reduced energy costs, and future-proofed our infrastructure for expansion.”

Results & Impact

Within 9 months, the colocation provider successfully launched a high-performance, modular data center, achieving the following outcomes:

  • 40% Faster Deployment Reducing time-to-market from 18 months to 9 months.

  • Scalability & Future-Proofing “ Easily expandable by adding additional prefabricated modules.

  • Energy Efficiency Achieved (PUE 1.2) “ Lower operational costs and sustainability compliance.

  • 30% Reduction in Cooling Energy Use “ Advanced airflow and liquid cooling cut energy waste.

  • Achieved LEED Gold Certification “ Positioning the client as a leader in green colocation services
